party night at the Viking
OCTOBER PARTY AT THE VIKING MUSIC AND DANCHALL.. And what a party from the very first night when we had the effervescent Plain Loco & Lass Vegas, all knew we where in for a treat.. Steve & Tony ie Plain Loco sang some amazing numbers “Messed up in Memphis” “White Rose” involved the Rocky Wranglers keeping time on the triangle. The wonderful Angels Line dance clubs hear in force made there presence felt by taking round a bucket for our collection. during the 2nd set they tried to kill us all with an extended Lamtara Rumba from “Midnight hour”,” Hear comes my Baby” Tony & Steve also made sure that everyone in the hall was able to speak to them. Lass Vegas Rob and Maria opened with “Mr. Man in the moon” Maria a bubbly brunette who sings country so amazing. Her rendition of “Patient heart” a Bekka & Billy number was a great blast from the past. Maria sang a brilliant “Something in the water” also teaming up with Rob for a duo I can see this duo pleasing all before them Plain Loco joined Lass Vegas on stage for an impromptu “Knee deep” & Just for Grins although Steve’s remarks made it so hard for the rest of the guys to keep straight faces to sing. Andy Called a halt in the early hours to make way for Saturday. This saw Julie up with a lark to teach several dances. The afternoon welcomed The Westcoasters making there last appearance with us this afternoon as a three piece as Mike is hanging up his country keys. It was always a very professional two sets of live music with classic played with equal amounts of feeling & fun. “Country down to my Soul” [Hot Tomalas] always a favorite with Steve dancing and singing with the crowded dance floor. Look out for Pete and Steve around the circuit still going strong as a duo. Saturday Night The Curtis Bros & The Thrillbillies our entertainers for this evening. Opening with a full on “Loving All Night” it was dust of your boots get on the floor. Billy & his brothers cover great country numbers that have you dancing all through there two upbeat sets. I love the way he throws in some golden oldie the like of “Trial of Tears” His rendition of “Bitter sweet memory’s” was great. The Thrillbillies opened the first of there two sets with “Woman” I noted that on “It only Hurts when I cry” it was Rocking with the Wranglers in the Klondyke They covered some great songs and even made us do the “Red Hot Salsa” Andy encouraged all to the items on the stall and auctioned several items. Between the Stall & Auction we raised £1070.21pence. Thanks go to Andy, ‘D’,Dawn Peacock, Bunn leisure & The Nissan Garage on the Shripney way each contributed items for auction. Sunday morn, Julie [Katz] Davies up and about to teach further dances and run through ones that may not have caught. Julie always on hand to aid anyone who asks is brilliant. We then had a Viking Virgin in the guise of Paul Taylor making his first appearance and what a very memorable visit to the club as he faultlessly played two sets of high quality up to date country line dance songs. Mixing it up with “Heaven in a woman’s eyes” [inspiration] and “Don’t drink the water” dance of the same name. Paul played one of his own tracks, “she never makes me cry” that filled the floor and had the same production values as some of the Nashville classics. We look forward to seeing Paul again. Sunday Night. Texas Tornados & Natalie Thurlow where here to entertain us and close the party. Natalie bounced onto stage sparkling from ear to ear. Opened with “Gambling Man” running straight into Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” Natalie gave us two crammed packed sets barley pausing for breath “Nimby” and even though not country Plan ‘B’s “She Said went down a storm. No one can say that this lady does not give you a belting evening. Texas Tornados a great trio all in matching shirts kept it strictly country as is there way. Opened with Alan Jackson’s “Freight Train. “George straits” Here for a good time” named the night well also I loved the version of Scot McCreedy’s “I love you this Big” heard for the first time by me Luke Bryans “Country Girl Shake it for me” Natalie & Texas Tornados Gave us “High Class Lady & Bitter Sweet” so The Viking bids adieu to another year and we wish all a great New Year
For our Final Night we wished to give a huge Thank you therefore With much pleasure The Viking opened its doors to all for gratis ie FREE. We also had as a surprise a double header. BROADCASTER & LIVEWIRE. BROADCASTER sang numbers the likes of “Billy B Bad”,” Cabo San Lucas “ & Toby Keith’s You Can’t Read My Mind” Pete & Graham “I Loved her first” bought folk of a sensible age along with mites & those that the age is undetermined onto the floor to dance to this one. And of course it would not be a night with Broadcaster if Graham was not given to play “Baker Street” that brilliant Gerry Rafferty number I alas did not see the full two sets from LIVEWIRE due to being called away but O M Gosh the line up with the addition of Pedro was superb he added something that just seemed to balance all. Livewire already a band with a line dance following. and Debbie’s Voice so true and clear brillll: Opening with “Come back my Love” the set I heard ran through almost to quickly for me as I was engrossed with every song. The song “Bitter sweet memories” sung to perfection. I recall Debbie singing “Alabama Slamming” boy does she nail this one. I have to dearly apologize for not seeing there final set cause if it was as good as the first one then I’m the looser big time. However keep up with the website www.vikingcw.com for all the latest news and a glimpse of your new season. Jacqui Happy new Year Cheyenne are a duo who’s main aim is to please Opening with a Sugarlands”Rhyme or Reason” flowed easily into “Knee Deep” “Mamma he’s Crazy” a brilliant number first a hit for the Judds now a song that Wynona has made her own. From “Messed up in Memphis” the floor was busy and folk where happy in the hands of Cheyenne Andy announced the running total of the amount of money raised for the St Wilfred’s Hospice £1063.21 which was presented to them this evening
22.10.11 Cheyenne are a duo who’s main aim is to please Opening with a Sugarlands”Rhyme or Reason” flowed easily into “Knee Deep” “Mamma he’s Crazy” a brilliant number first a hit for the Judds now a song that Wynona has made her own. From “Messed up in Memphis” the floor was busy and folk where happy in the hands of Cheyenne Andy announced the running total of the amount of money raised for the St Wilfred’s Hospice £1063.21 which was presented to them this evening
Muddy Boots each of the guy’s slick in black spangled jackets/Stetsons arrived here on Saturday 8th to entertain us and did they? They sure did. Opening with, “Anyway the wind blows a great Brothers Phelp number. What an opener! And then they sang “Closer” well take it from me after just 2 numbers I knew that we where in for a rare evening. The Vocals, Harmonies and just sheer chemistry between them is great. Three sets of music so current that dancers began to realize that pacing would be required. They covered all the greats from, a foot stomping “If I was a Woman” dealt us. Andy ‘D’s work, was made all the easier, by the amazing choice of songs played over the three sets. Sets like theses all country give me more.
1st OCTOBER the Viking played host to the superb double header Rob Childs. And M.T.Allen When Rob appears in a duo / band or Solo as this evening you will be entertained by a brilliant musician. Opening with “Just to see you smile” he continued to play songs that he knew would have folk up on there feet. during his set he introduced us to the amazing vocal cords of Maria Lee who will be replacing Nadine when Lass Vegas are called upon a petite dark hared lass with a voice that belays her size sang Lady Anteblellum’s “I run to you” giving us another 2 songs she succeeded in surprising us all the way she gels with Rob during the harmonies. Rob’s abilities with the guitar pass so many he is brilliant just watch and listen to his guitar playing from “Rollin with the flow” and Rob plays Eagles songs with a active ease. I shall look forward to seeing Rob again and of course in the Guise of Lass Vegas along with Maria Lee MT ALLEN the evening . Malcolm as ever has a bouncy way of exerting himself on you by his manner and smile He opened with “People are Crazy”” quickly flowing into “Wishfull thinking” “Just a Kiss” And a wonderful oldie the Mavericks “Hear comes my Baby” and a great Eddy Rabbit’s “Driving my life away”
23rd September full house at the Viking bought on with the expected fireworks from Tony Rouse and The Rousterbouts aka [Little Rock] Tony sang solo for the first set Toby Keith’s you can’t read my mind” “High Class Lady” you know that Tony being so current is going to keep the floor full with amazing country numbers. “As she’s Walking Away” was one of my favorite numbers [tell the truth, so many songs all great] and with Tony’s up beat way that makes you feel like smiling even if your down can’t be beat. Next set up came the cream of the top of the cake. Joe, Steve & Derrick each dressed in black looking brilliant surrounded Tony to give us the most amazing set that I have heard for a while. There standard “Peaceful Easy Feeling” had harmonies that made your hair on your neck stand. Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” had everyone in time to a gentle sway. It was so good to here songs that not every band plays. Awesome. Andy ‘D’ played requests throughout the evening.
17th October Lass Vegas & Charlotte Howard. A quizzical, audience this evening, as we had a debut artist tonight. However. Lass Vegas Nadine & Rob, together for the last time here at the Viking in the guise of Lass Vegas opened the first of there two sets with “Rhyme or Reason”. Nadine, in full splendid vocals and looking great in a pretty pink dress sang some brilliant numbers “Laid back in low key” “Does the wind still blow in Oklahoma” a Reba number. Steve Earle’s “Galway Girl” Lass Vegas play to both genres of country i.e. The Liner’s and the Country folk which is such a good mix these days. Changing outfits between sets continuing to look great they entertained us with every song sung. Playing out to “Louisiana Swing, and “High Class Lady” wonderful. Now then Track this name. A SHOWCASE Tonight was offered to Charlotte Howard 19rs old blew me away with the sheer power and strength of her wonderful voice. Opening with a powerful “Honey I’m Home” Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” was nailed perfectly. Charlotte gave us One set full of brilliance with only a 5sec break between songs I was left wondering when she would come up for air, but OM Gosh she was superb her rendition of “Nothing at all” was sung by someone born to sing. I hope that the Viking in offering her a Showcase for her talent has placed her on the steps to a great career
10th September with the leaves beginning to turn the Westcoasters made a welcome return to the Viking presenting three sets full of favorite’s that Line dancers like to boot scoot to. ”Smokey Places” a Ronnie McDowell number That old favorite “Tempted” which always fills the floor here it became a double circle of folk wishing to join in.Steve, Mike and Pete each in black a trio, that time does not appear to change as others. Steve, on the floor, dancing, with the dancers. more often down there whilst singing at the same time. The songs that flowed from one to another they know from old that the Viking’ers, “Love to dance” From really fast numbers such as “Ain’t Going Down” to ones of an easier pace ie Brooks n Dunn’s “Neon Moon”. “Past the Point of Rescue”. You know that Line dancers will have sore feet by the time they have finished. Andy played us out of the evening with his request’s.
Alan Gregory & Shania Twain Tribute aka Amanda Stone. Alan as always smiling and dressed oh so smart! Opened with “You’re no good” quickly following with “Love done gone” a Billy Currington number. Both sets presented by Alan wore his trademark. A full Floor From “Louisiana sway “,“White Rose” the Viking was buzzing with happy feet and huge smiles. Alan has a new CD out which features much of his set list but also an amazing “I love You This Big” recently released by Scott McCreedy. Alan wowed us as is his habit. Our Andy the big guy in black played between sets various songs as requested this time only featuring 2 tracks that where not country*. Shania Twain aka Amanda Stone played her set between Alan’s. She came out dressed in a long leopard print hooded coat as did Shania when she sang “That don’t impress me much” stomping into “Who’s bed have your Boots been under” “You’re still the one” Changing outfits Amanda gave us a full on tribute to the great Shania earning a full on encore and singing out to “Don’t be Stupid” Alan played his 2 set closing with Andy’s disco
20th August another double header Dolly Parton Tribute aka Sara Jane along with a five piece band The Billy J Curtis Band booked to open and close the evening I last saw Billy as a solo artist but in this band ‘wow’ Opening with a great musical intro of “Loving all night” let us know that we where in for a treat. From being “Messed up in Memphis” Streets of Backersville” dropping in their own song “Rollercoaster Ride” “Get me to the church on Cumberland Road” an amazing Oldie “Flowers on the Wall” which brought in the drumming skills they played out to “Stay with me” a band that I want to see again. Our Dolly Tribute was the filling to the night Dolly Parton aka Sarah Jayne Dressed in a white dolly style dress sang a variety of Dolly’s songs the likes of “Jolene” “Love is like a butterfly” “Just when I needed you most” singing her heart out she gave us a full menu of Dolly’s songs. “Looking Like that” closing with a super “I beg Your Pardon an encore was called for which became “I will always love you” listening to Dolly’s songs makes you realize just how many pop stars have covered great country songs thus loosing the country tag but we know it’s there. Billy, Came back to close the evening down. He will be welcome back I’m sure.
13th August Dirty Money is featuring Sarah Jory Dirty Money are four piece band Mick Cartright vocals/Acoustic, Rick Cook/Bass, Joe Cook/Drums Paul Mason/lead guitar and of course Sarah Jory/steel opening with “Call me the Breeze” Lynyard Skynyrd very much a rock/country band who instrumentally cannot be faulted. Their “Put some Drive in your country” a Travis Tritt number brilliant “Dixey on my mind” the variety of songs offering something different was good to hear not yet played by any other band at this venue was “Free bird” Lynyard Skynyrd one thing that was a disappointment Sarah who has an amazing voice did not sing throughout the entire night. However our Andy ‘D’ tried to quell the disappointment by playing some super requests all through the night

30th July our last gig of the & yet another Double header Richard Palmer & Weston Line with Marie Lee both gave us two sets Richard Palmer a first for me to see hi, although he has been at the Viking before. Sang from “Knee Deep” “¼ after One” “I Loved her first” & “They Call me The Fireman” a man of very few words but loads of songs. Even asking us for requests, singing with a smile on his face he pleased a very discerning audience. Westonline & Marie Lee what a package. Marie Lee Dark haired and a little dynamo, with a voice that so deserves a recording contract. She Opened with “Suds in the Bucket” and sang two full sets along with Cliff & Paul. They adapted the set list that they play so that Marie Lee could shine. Paul sang a great Merle Haggard number “Today I started loving you again “Sea of Cowboy hats” made it clear that this as a trio can do very little wrong. Calling Richard up at the end of there last set they gave us “Galway Girls & Love done gone” fantastic. What a night!
23rd. July Nadine Somers Band, Nadine back with Rob & Bob, what a brilliant night Nadine is as petite as ever opened with “Closer” they mixed it up with fantastic numbers Trisha Yearwoods “Falling for a reason” would have made her proud. “Messed in Memphis” “If the Duke Box took teardrops” “Dannie Leigh” all in all it was a night to remember. Nadine was in her element shaking her bananas next to Rob & Bob it was almost as it should be the three together. What made for an even better evening was Andy filling in the spaces with requests all night.
17TH JULYPlain Loco arrived to entertain us. “Woman” they went straight into a great play list that had a lot of thought packed in it. From bang up to the minute songs “Love dun Gone” to yesteryear’s “Don’t Get Me Wrong” from the Pretenders. Steve & Tony are a great duo that enjoy being up there entertaining us at times it’s easy not to be amazed at Tony’s amazing guitar work which showed to perfection whilst Steve sung “Burlesque” along with Steve’s nonchalant remarks in the appropriate spaces make for a very enjoyable evening. The dance friendly numbers & Andy ‘D’ s requests made it a sure fired winner.
9th July Natalie Thurlow & Rob Childs where booked for this evening. Rob Replaced, Glen Douglas, who is unwell, at this time. It was Rob’s [aka] Lass Vegas first solo performance here at the Viking. And didn’t he do well. Opening with a great “Billy B Bad” he kept the dance floor full through both sets. A superb “The More I Drink” a Blake Shelton number It was also fun to hear a Tremloes number “Here comes my baby” Rob played numbers that e knew would keep the dancers on the floor. Natalie, Dressed all in black with spangles looked amazing opening with “Love dun gone” set the trend for two full on stomping numbers from “Tempted” to “Drip Dropping” she kept us fully entertained there was one song that took my ear was Blake’s “All of Me” which sounded so good. Through much of July our Julie has not been tick a tee boo! Leslie Partridge stepped up to the bar and took lessons. We all want to thank Leslie. Andy ‘D’ played requests throughout the night The atmosphere here tonight was electric wonderful.
2nd July Nashville Rose last here in August last year. Father & Son along with Rose entertained us with three sets of superb country music. Opening with “Toes” they played great tunes. It was fantastic to watch dancers doing that old favourite Boz Scaggs number “Fly like a Bird” It was nice to hear different tunes. “Sweet Sweet Smile” first sung by the Carpenters, a fantastic bluesy “Snap you’re Fingers” another great oldie “Mexicalli Rose” first published in 1923 and first sung by Bing Crosby. “Feel Right”. A Tanya Tucker number” You Can’t Read My Mind” Toby Keith As you can see from the sprinkling of information posted they pulled out songs that kept the floor full and dancers & listeners happy all through the evening in fact they had to give us an encore which pleased all. Andy D. also fulfilled his mandate by playing dancers requests throughout the evening
25th June ‘11 Little Rock. Not much can be said about this trio that has not been heralded before them. They are a superb trio who unfortunately are play as a trio here at the Viking for the Last Time Joe Bewick : Drums & Vocals is hanging up his sticks for a while. Steve & Derrick will continue to wow us but as a duo. However that is to come but this evening they kicked of with “Easy Feeling followed by “Changes” before a word was spoken. “How long” was sung brilliantly by Derrick the boys are renowned for their musical skills and the way that Steve, Eye’s closed plays his guitar almost as if it was an extension of himself. Amazing. “Seminole Wind” “Hang in there Superman” “Lets all go down to Dumas Walker” There was not a soul in the club that did not enjoy the sounds of this great three piece “Little Rock” there encore was “Sweat Home Alabama” but no one would let them leave until we pulled out “Ghost in my guitar” What a hot ending to a damp June.
18th June ‘11 Brushwood a popular duo back for another visit to the Viking Brian R/Guitarist now very settled with Andy L/Vocalist play music that pulls Linedancers onto the floor giving us three sets with numbers packed throughout. They make it hard to highlight songs as they play ones that you just want to hear again and again. ”Un love me” “How Long” “Let Mamma Go” what was great was that there where songs scattered though all three sets that are not played every Saturday night by a different band. These guys also always look so good.” All Night Long” “Love done gone” “Country Down to my soul” They packed their sets pleasing all before them, making Andy’s job of playing requests easier as every one was happy. Our Julie was not well and called of some of her classes we hope she makes a speedy recovery.
Party weekend. The onset, of the Andy ‘D’. Marathon weekend Friday Night’s Line up. Calico & Tony Rouse. Tony opened with the “Love Done Gone” but the front line of dancers made Tony almost lost for words. All wearing, large snowflakes badges, on their backs, written up with “Tony’s Tarts” glorious! With a huge smile singing super songs the floor was bursting. Get on there quick or miss a space! Tony danced with us to “God Bless Texas” “That’s what they said about the buffalo” Charlie Daniels “Drinking My Baby Goodbye” Both sets packed the floor, huge smiles and a great personality of the stage. Between sets and to end the evening Andy ‘D’ played dancer’s requests Calico a duo that threatened to break up but here they are as good as ever Nickie & Shanks opened with “Rhyme ‘n’ Reason” Nickie soon had us all in the palm of her hand they packed both sets, few words spoken just all sung wonderful from being “Tempted” “Messed up in Memphis” which allowed Shanks skill to shine on a guitar solo. Toby Keith’s wonderful “White Rose” shanks gave us a haunting version of “Everything I do” closing on “Seven Night” they called Tony Back up with them the full floor patiently waited for them to sing through 3 extra numbers that had us howling for more. Fitting ending, to a, brilliant opener for the June party Sat Morning early. Julie [Katz] Davies Taught a record 6 dances during the morning session. Richard Palmer entertained the matinee set keeping listeners & dancers happy. Highlighted with “Disappearing Bubbles”. Sat evening with a second hand stall set up and prizes to raffle. The evening began Dale& Dawn Peacock along with Dan Hills bribing folk to buy goods. they raised £215.Muddy Boots & Diablos Muddy Boots first up kicked of with “Anyway the wind blows” a brilliant Eric Clapton number “ Mark Nestler’s song Heaven in my woman’s Eyes” each and every song they played throughout both sets filled the floor “High Class Lady” bowing out with “Past the point of Rescue” Diablos a four piece band that play a vast amount of their own music all country “Times & Wasting” “Me and the Moon” “East Coast Road” Working for a living” They packed both sets full of music that made it fun to watch the liners working out the steps for a dance to fit. Brilliant. Check out their web site for a chance to purchase their cd’s. Sunday Morning another lively session from Julie opened up Sunday with a bang she pushed and eased folk through yet more dances. A Familiar face graced us this Sunday afternoon. Bob Keeley. This was Bob’s first solo visit to the club, but certainly won’t be his last! His likeable personality comes through his music and he is a real entertainer Bob’s Highlights included firm favourites and current country linedance numbers. The penultimate session Sunday Night M T Allen & Lass Vegas our final line up. Mal now solo opened with “People are crazy” Mal enjoys being solo and it shows, he even had the Bar staff in line doing the “wobble” behind the bar. Amazing, both his sets where packed solid with the familiar one liner jokes that led into them he amused and kept us all smiling. Nadine Somers & Rob Childs namely Lass Vegas a duo that can cover or sing anything with panache they to had two sets singing “Just to see you smile” “I run to You” the floor filled with couples and dancers who just enjoy the tones from Nadine who sings with a huge amount of grace. Towards the end of their set they called up there old jousting partner Bob Keeley and then they ran through even more superb numbers as if that wasn’t enough they then managed to squeeze M T Allen onto the stage and gave us a thumping “Billy B Bad” & “Just want to dance the night away” what a brilliant way to end the evening. During the party we managed to raise even more money for St Wilfred’s the running total is getting there so keep them items rolling in for the Peacocks to sell on there stall. Andy cleared the decks finally a silly o’clock Monday morning. WOW Jacqui Peacock & Andy Davies
4th June -11 We where in for a treat this evening. A 5 piece band, Raising Caine made their Debut at the Viking. Hailing from, Newcastle upon Tyne. Opened with Ricky Van Shelton’s “Where was I” quickly followed by “What the Cowgirls Do” the floor quickly filled. Here was a band that where an unknown to most of us, but oh boy did they make us want to dance. Throughout there three sets, dance friendly country music that had your feet tapping or boot scooting across the floor. Playing, songs that where new to us, but great “Tequila makes her clothes fall off” a Joe Nichols hit. “He thinks he’ll keep her” they also played a haunting “Stay with me” we had an amazing night with a well deserved stomping encore they played out to “Big Wheels”& “ Fast as You” Andy played requests as he does every week.
29th. May our last session for this month Spaghetti Western, appeared at the Viking. Pete opened with a fast and furious “Okie from Muskogee” Zac Brown’s “Knee Deep” Spaghetti Western are a quartet that are amazing musicians Graham’s amazing skill as a musician has obviously been inherited by his two sons who play there given instruments with such skill that they are a joy to watch. For three sets we where given some great numbers” King of the Road” , That wonderful lyrical “I just want to dance with you” each set built on the previous one, meaning that those who stayed on the floor, gradually got wearier & wearier. Sadly this Saturday our Julie was unable to be here but never let it be said that the Viking would let you down. We called on the good offices of our Leslie to teach some great new dances which she did admirably, staying on the floor during the evening to make sure that those taught had guidance. I shall be unable to say the big guy in Black very soon as he is wasting away Our Andy ‘D’ played requests all evening in between sets and through to the small hours. I have a late change to announce for June on the 25th Little Rock will be appearing in place of the advertised artist. Keep up to date with any changes through the web site.
21.5.11. A surprise was in store for us this evening Poorly Derek from Magill was hospitalised we all wish him well. Therefore Pete brought along his Texas Tornados To, plug the gap. Which, I may say they did with great aplomb. As you are no doubt aware. They where only here last month. However they gave us a great new selection of songs. Brad Paisley’s, “The Pants” Toby Keith’s “Trailerhood” a superb “Earth Angel” 1954 Penguin’s song. “One woman Man”, a Josh Turner number. Pete noticed some new folk in the audience, new to linedance he bounced onto the floor giving correct terminology for steps whilst teaching them Pete, Stewart & Roger gave us a vast array of Country songs that kept us dancing and smiling most of the night. Wearing matching check shirts they made a great effort to please all. Pete also sang a great number “I Miss You A Little” which he has covered on a great Love Song album he has just released. Andy ‘D’ played some amazing numbers all requests which is brilliant
14.5.11 Livewire a duo established now since ’07, clearly have a linedance following. Arrived, to entertain us. .Opening with “Knee Deep” Ainsley & Debbie certainly know which songs that pull out the dancers. They kept each of their three sets upbeat and full of great numbers the likes Cherr’s “Welcome to Burlesque”. Debbie’s voice gets clearer and more pitch perfect every time I hear her. Ainsley & Debbie favour making sure there audience dance all night. “I run to you” a Lady Antebellum song was sung to perfection by Debbie. Alongside the wonderful new songs, great old standards where scattered through-out each set. We also had Our Andy ‘D’ playing requests .
Jacqui Peacock
May 7th a double header night, with Debut performance from Donna Wyle. What a surprise she was an absolute dynamo, & what a great voice opening with “Oklahoma Boogie “setting the pace of what was to come.. She sang two sets, packing both with dance numbers “Come Dance with Me” saw her down on the floor singing whilst dancing with members. Numbers from the likes of Don Williams “Lone star state of Mine” & Trisha Yearwood’s “Falling for a reason” where just a sprinkling of the great songs she gave us. Never let it be said “a solo act is just Karaoke”. Karaoke this wasn’t from Donna Wyle. I for one hope she returns to the Viking. Also tonight we had the pleasure of Westonline Cliff & Paul gave us two dance friendly sets which meant, most folk at the end of this night would have sore feet. “People are Crazy” “Laid back in Low Key” and a brilliant version of a Brian Adams song that Cliff had adapted into country a version had me longing for this to happen more often. “Everything I Do” sounded so goooood. At the end of there last set they called up Donna, she sang with them “Holding onto yesterday” & “Disappearing bubbles” Andy ended our evening by playing out requests as promised. Jacqui peacock30.4.11 Little Rock our Saturday act this evening. Little Rock are a band who appear to adore the Eagles and why not. It suits there musical talents brilliantly. Steve Place, a guitarist who appears to just have this instrument at the end of his arm, he plays it with such passion and brilliance that it is hard to realise that we are in The Viking. He does a large part of the vocals. They gave us three sets packed to the gunnels with country music. From honouring the songs from yesteryear to singing the current songs, there could have only been very few, who would not have been in their element. The Eagles song “Girl from yesterday” had couples round the edge of the floor and liners filling the centre. ”Fields of Gold” Showcased the amazing voice of Derrick Firth. Willie Nelson’s “Seven Spanish Angels” a golden song in my estimation was sung brilliantly be Steve. One surprise was a 1936 number from the archives of Hank Lockin There’ll be no teardrops tonight” They played out to a thumping “Get over It” amazing. Made all the better for having Joe Berwick on Drums. Andy ‘D’ played requests all night keeping the floor in between sets full I also noted that our Leslie again did her wonderful thing by taking round the floor showing them the two step youngsters new to linedance. Wonderful evening with wonderful folk at the Viking
The Westcoasters gave us a very entertaining night that saw Mike, Pete and Steve on top form. Steve, the lead singer was as happy on the stage as he was on the dancefloor singing as he danced with The Viking regulars. Mike and Pete are both so very underrated as quality musicians on the country circuit. Pete really makes his guitar sing and plays the instrumental breaks with aplomb; And Mike tinkles the ivories better than most. The set list contained mostly ‘safe’ floorfillers which meant everyone was up dancing most of the night. Viking favourites like Garth Brookes’ Ain’t Going Down and Friends in Low Places were mixed in with George Jones’ Billy be Bad and Steve Earl’s Galway Girls. But it was also nice to hear some Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette and Ronny McDowell in there too. Overall we couldn’t have been happier with the performance and the atmosphere created by The Westcoasters
9.4.11 Alan Gregory the guy dressed in black with a huge smile and talent to match. Wearing, a wonderful western shirt, as bright as he is. Alan as always so fresh and up to date with his songs. you know that you will get to play all the dances that you have worked so hard to learn. From singing the best voted song of 2010 “Fool in me” Zac Browns “ Make This Day” so suits Alans bouncy style, so it fitted him like a glove. Through three sets Alan had the audience smiling, dancing and enjoying the crack “Wash my Blues Away” “Mexicali Rose” a song from way back covered by the old greats brought to life again tonight by our Alan. Alan gave us a refreshingly bright evening full of fun and brilliant songs, he bounced his way through the night making every one smil along with himself. Our Andy one of the only DJ’s that will play your requests. Of course some would prefer all country but we have a DJ prepared to play full on requests even the music that I call ear pollution.
2.4.11 Texas Tornados Pete opened with a fantastic “Chill Factor” which I may say he dances with the ease of an experienced Line dancer. He along with Stewart & Roger gave us a vast array of Country songs. The Likes of “Messed Up In Memphis” by Darryl Worley a fantastic bouncy beat was played along to “Take these chains” a 1953 number brilliant. Pete led the dancing & singing “Seven Nights to Rock” [whatever he’s on, I want some” He pulled out so many fresh new numbers it was hard choosing those that hit the spot as all did. Stewarts fingers became a blur whilst “High Class Lady” was being performed. Pete also gave us a couple of songs from his new Album of Love Songs. Well worth a buy. He had the Floor full all night with the exception of a wonderful love song that he sung that had couples having a cuddle whilst he sung.
26TH MARCH JELLICO ROAD APPEARED TO ROUND OF OUR MARCH LINE UP. WHAT AN AMAZING MONTH
Our 1st Party. Friday 18th, Lass Vegas [with a twist]” & Billy Curtis. Billy, having, damaged his leg during our dreadful winter. Limping, on to the stage. Nothing lame in his songs though. He set the ball running with a fast a furious “Loving all Night” he gave us two sets over the course of the evening. AT Bone Shuffle arose out of “Take these chains from my heart” Then came the Twist. Lass Vegas comprised of Nadine Somers but Rob had morphed into John Permenter Nadine was in stupendous form her vocal cords as sharp as ever as for John what a surprise for us enjoying the party. With plenty of resin on his bow he sang and assisted Nadine throughout both sets “John’s “Louisiana on a Saturday night” shone as much as Nadines “Amazing”. They harmonised on several songs also inviting Billy up onto the stage for a singalong to end the evening. Andy D. of course having settled into his DJ’s booth has prepared himself for the long haul. Sat: Morning We saw the New Mrs Davies our Julie teach the first of Nine dances that she prepared for the weekend. Sat afternoon session Rick Storm. Rick kept the dancers and listeners pleased with a great selection of mostly modern country “Love Done Gone” a Billy Currington number was amongst the highlights of the afternoon.Andy ‘D’ kept the floor full during Rick’s break with popular “Retro Request” ½ hour playing songs and dances that are at the very least 5 years old all requested of course. Sat Night our double header was Tony Rouse & Little Rock what a diamond line up. The effervescent Tony Opened with “Wash away My Blues” with his great smile and stage presence no one could be disappointed. My favourite song of the evening from Tony was “I loved her first” Little Rock made up the second act what an act to follow Tony. Wow! Opening with “Tougher than the rest” quickly flowing “Dangerous Curves” Jace Everett’s great number “Bad Things” was a brilliant addition to an amazing list the viking was buzzing and was rounded of by Tony climbing onto the stage with Little Rock to for an impromptu crack to end Saturday night. Sunday Julie ever ready for sore footed dancers to boot scoot out the cob webs for another teaching session. Over two sessions 9 dances taught. Congrats Julie We then ran into the afternoon session with Livewire a great Duo. Debbie & Ainsley, up to date slipping the likes of “Unpredictable”, but always taking the chance to include there own retro theme with dance floor classics along the way. our last night. Sunday Plain Loco & Broadcaster where the double header this evening. Plain loco never known to displease a Viking audience kept the floor full throwing in for good measure some head twisters by playing golden oldies lovely to see the liners confused and trying to recall a great dance from the past. Singing some of there self penned songs makes you realise why they are brilliant. Broadcaster the other half of our evening entertainment played songs that they know will please dancers even throwing in the odd pop song. Andy ‘D’ wound up the long weekend by continuing as he started playing requests it was a brilliant 1st party of the year Jacqui & Andy
-March 12th saw Henry Smiths Country Dreams here at the Viking. What a pleasure to have a band on stage so professional in the way they present themselves looking as sharp as the songs they sang. Henry gave us an amazing repertoire of Hits from the likes of Josh Turner, Alan Jackson Merle Haggard. The songs he sang where a mixture of old and new with a full floor of dancers, sharp band on the stage The Viking was at it’s very best. One of Henry’s songs was a tongue twisting “Auctioneer” The speed that he wound it up to whilst dancers where keeping up was amazing. Jacqyu
Thrillbillies Oh my 2011 and the Viking offered for Openers a great saver in reducing the membership along with door price for non members. Our 2011 Diary kicked of with The Thrillbillies a super fun loving duo who, if on the bill you know that you will be entertained as well as be able to dance and smile. From being “Messed up in Memphis” “Bobby with an I” we had a glorious night, several new songs arose the likes of Michael learns to Rock Blue Night. ‘Wonderful’. All in all, one of the best opening nights, for a new season. Jacqui P
