Colin has been able to gather together two amazing acts. One well known to us being The Smile of Tony Rouse the other [and I have checked him out on the internet] Oh yes! Billy Curtis. So get your boots out make note on the calender and come on down.
21st august
The Viking presented this Texas Tornados & Shania Twain tribute show Pete Stothard Lead singer of the Texas Tornados Trio [who by the way was 21 again} along with Roger and Stewart gave us two sets crammed to the rafters with country music Opening with “It Happens” they pulled out New and Old songs that kept the floor packed. You can be sure that Pete will pull something out of the hat that we rarley hear, one such was Rick Trevino’s “Walk Out Backwards” Texas Tornados are a group that play Country Music that makes you realise just how good it is. Not just singing the everyone does songs. From Easton Corbin’s “Don't ask me bout a woman" “7 Nights” had pete on the floor singing and giving it the full applejacks. Brad Paisley’s “Catch all the Fish” fast a furios bringing out the amazing guitar play and backing from the boys. “You’re Not in Love Dwight Yoakham, George Jones we had two sets full of pure country. There encore was of corse loud. Pulling “Bobby with & I” from the boys. Back in June a young lady Angela came along with her partner as Cheyenne. Unbeknown to us, but my gosh not surprising Angela also Comprises a Shania Twain Tribute Show Dressed in knee high black boots and leggings along with a leapoard skin top. She opened with “Honey I’m home” smiling and inviting us onto the floor she proceeded to give us some of Shania’s fantastic hits. “Lets Go”, I’m Outa Here” Your’e still the one” to name but a very few. Her partner Ky came on stage to give a beautiful version of “From this Moment” . “Rock this Country” for an encore we where sung “Shoes” We have had a brilliant August shame about the weather, but it’s been hot here at the Viking with our Big guy in black Andy ‘D’ there is little excuse not to dance or just sit a while. Andy loves nothing more than to play requests which he does to the wee small hours.
14.8.10
Rick Storm & Nashville Rose headed up the Viking this Damp Saturday. I have not had the pleasure of seeing Rick Storm at the Viking before. Rick opened the night with the first of two sets he is a great solo act for filling a floor with tunes that Linedancers want to dance to. From the standards “Billy B Bad” a Daryl Worley track “Messed up in Memphis” he pulled out some great oldies “T Bone shuffle” Kenny Rogers “Someone must feel like a fool tonight” Both sets where packed with numbers that not only paced you they kept folk wanting to dance. He also played a brilliant “Tap Room Boogie” a Travis Kid number not heard that one for years. Between sets Our Big Guy in Black Andy ‘D’ Spun all the requests that where asked for. Nashville Rose a trio Father & Son Ray & Steve Kedge Rachael Rose being the brilliant lady in the middle. They sang some amazing songs Rachael, Ray & Steve make a brilliant trio her voice fits country like a glove. From “Man in the Moon” People are Crazy” “White Rose” a superb Tanya Tucker “Feel Right”
Like Rick they packed both there sets with numbers that head the Linedancers fanning themselves and now here’s a first I saw contra lines danced to “Tennessee waltz surprise” the dancers where beaming from ear to ear Julie [Katz] Murray was spotted in the Klondike teaching the newbie’s at 11 45 p.m. when does her day finish.
The 7th of August. Double bubble tonight Plain loco providing two sets with Sarah Jane’s DOLLY PARTON road show. Dolly [Sarah] took the centre set with long blonde hair and pink gingham mini dress Dolly style we had a 45 min set packed full of Dolly Parton winners. From “Love and Affection”, “Joshua” “Jolean” “Coat of Many Colour” “Two doors Down” The giggle was there along the very sound of Dolly. We even had a rendering of “Island’s in the Stream” For an encore she gave us a rousing “9 to 5” Plain Loco gave us the 1st and 3rd sets Fresh and brilliant as ever. Opening with “It Happens” it did the floor filled to capacity they are bouncy,& fun, playing wonderful country music that keeps everyone happy. Sure fired winners that win hearts as well as feet.
31st July. The highly entertaining Thrillbillies along with Peter White’s Kenny Rogers Tribute Act graced a full to bursting Viking this evening. The first weekend of the Holiday season got of to a brilliant start The Thrillbillies offering up the first of there two sets. With Dwight Yoakam’s “It Only Hurts When I Cry” Dave & Eddy where in fine fettle, Eddy having bought down some young friends to watch him in action. Dave sang a wonderful version of “No More Cloudy Days” They pulled out some absolute crackers from there vast repertoire Harking, back and forth, between old & new. Dave donned a plastic Elvis wig whilst weaving in and out of the dancers singing. “I wanna Be Elvis Tonight” “Galway Girls” had specialised lyrics. In Between our sandwich of The Thrillbillies we had the great pleasure of Peter White’s Kenny Rogers tribute act. Is it a tribute to the stalwart of country Kenny Rogers? Oh Yes indeed it is. Opening with, a wonderful. “So in Love with You” Peter as Kenny went on to sing and relate various tales from his route to becoming, the top Kenny Rogers tribute. act. “Coward of the County”. At times eyes closed you could almost imagine, that you where within ear shot of the real thing. Audience participation came with an invite for a member of the audience to mime along to “Islands in The stream” It was an evening where the Viking was at its very best. Great music, great company, Lots of fun, “Daytime Friends” and of course the “Gambler” having received due encore’s “Kenny” signed of with “By Me a Rose” and The wonderful “Ruby” Our ‘Kenny Rogers’ evening was a brilliant night along with The Thrillbillies and Our Big Guy in Black Andy ‘D’ Our Congratulations went out this evening To Launa who celebrated being young yet again along with Craig Rees, Having just surpassed himself by passing with honours to become a solicitor. Jacqui Peacock

24.7.10 Cajun Moon arrived on stage at the Viking this evening. Opening with a Brother Phelps number “Let Go” The four guys arrived dressed in full gamblers gear. “Looking good.” They played songs that are played rarely along with newer releases. “Cowboy Town” being one of those. The Mavericks “I don’t care if you love me anymore” Three sets with subtle changes of clothes throughout the music stayed country. “Living on Love” bought out some brilliant harmonies. My best listen for the evening being Trace Adkins “Swing” brilliant. For an encore they played a touching “Let The World Stop Turning”. Our man in black! Andy with a ‘D’ bad back apart, played some amazing spins, we say a fond farewell to Sue who departs for Aussie yet again. We hope she keeps her boots clean for the next visit and keeps in touch with friends on face book.
17.7.10 Spaghetti Western paid us a welcome return visit to the Viking I would not be surprised in the slightest if clubs all around do not find them as entertaining as we do. I hereby re-name Pete as the Man in the Big White Stetson, and did he look good. Oh Yes. Gone was the hamburger squashed hat, but in keeping with the rest of the Band he donned a superb Stetson and looked great. Opening with a Merle Haggard standard “Okie from Muskogee” they set the tone for the evening. Last here in May, one may have thought that we would here more of the same. Nope! “Truck Driving Man”, No way is this foursome going to disappoint those of us who adore country music. But take this to heart the Linedancers where out on the floor foot tapping, sidestepping, boot scooting there hearts out. “Ghost Riders in the Sky” bought out a huge ring of dancer’s long time since I have seen this one. Spaghetti Western played some amazing covers each one brilliant. “Move it on Over” bought out a brilliant guitar solo from the man in the White Stetson. Over three sets, which by the way just got better and better in content. Graham and sons along with Pete gave all of us an outstanding evening. Boz Scraggs “Fly Like A Bird” It was great fun to see old and new Line dances all through the night. The Big Man in Black our Andy ‘D’ also played some amazing tracks, He plays requests so that way no one should be able to say they did not hear there favourite track Spaghetti western Gave us a rousing “Sweet Home Alabama” for an encore.
Calico 10..7.10 Well then Calico Shanks & Nikki make up brilliant duo that keep it fresh and new each time I see them. On a hot sultry July evening they kept the floor full and the seats covered throughout three brilliant sets. Opening with “”It Happens” Shanks sang a very haunting sounding “White Rose” in fact they sang almost a completely different list from what was presented to us in March. I can only imagine the work they put into producing so many new songs. It is refreshing to hear an almost completely new list of songs from a duo that is so familiar with us. Once again they surprised me, from one or two pop songs they kept it country, fresh, bouncy, and full of pep that kept the entire audience in the palm of their hands. It was also nice to see some familiar faces back at the Viking. Our Big Man in Black Andy ‘D’ once again played some brilliant tracks, keeping it mostly country until late then out came the experienced fast feet of the dancers who just love to dance.
2.7.10 Diablos. Hailing from, Brighton. Diablos minus lead singer arrived on this hot evening at the Viking. Whilst they are brilliant musicians, and play some superb instrumentals, they are not the same band without there lead singer. Francois is a bouncy individual who plays steel/L/guitar who likes to pump it up and bounces up and down on stage even to the point of walking around whilst singing. Danny O’Loughlin & Geoff Ansell accompanied him singing and playing the various tunes. They introduced themselves by playing a long instrumental that had you thinking of western film theme song.[all we needed was a cowboy to ride across the floor] That led into “I just want to Dance with you” Diablos are on the rocking side of country writing much of there own material. They Closed one of there three sets with a brilliant version of Fleetwood Mac’s Albatross. From and Leroy Vandyke’s The Auctioneer’s song. to the likes of “Galway Girl” folk listened or danced through the night. [The Big Man in Black] Andy ‘D’ played some superb requests, it seems that his audience is stretching him and he pulls some brilliant plays out of the hat the way! How does that Julie manage to keep smiling whilst teaching little kiddiewinks at the back line dance’s after a gruelling 2/3 hour teaching lesson early on? jacqui
JUNE. WAS AN AMAZING MONTH. HOT, SULTRY, DISSAPOINTING [FOOTBALL] BUT WE STILL HAD SOME BRILLIANT BANDS ON INCLUDED IN THIS JUNE'S REPORT OUR PARTY. OUR COLIN CELEBRATED ANOTHER BIRTHDAY. ALONG WITH JULIE [KATZ] MURRAY. SHE HAS WORKED HER SOCKS OF THIS MONTH SORTING OUT DANCES FOR EVRYONE. NICE.!
Our Finalé for June 26th . The Three Westcoasters made it back to the Viking after a Two year break. Steve, Mike and Pete kept us entertained through three sets; they had a difficult time with the heat as the evening grew sultrier as the night went along. Not to be outdone Steve was on the floor dancing with the dancers more often that on the stage, singing at the same time. The songs that flowed from one to another where all tailored to keep the floor busy. They know from old that the Viking’ers, “Love to dance” From really fast numbers ones of an easier pace. Steve Earle: “Johnny Come Lately ““Folsom prison blues” Steve’s chosen partner for “Tempted” was ‘Lamby’ Andy called Colin out to celebrate is birthday with us. Nice one how old? “Never”.
19th. June Plain Loco. Hot Sultry night. A superb duo, now that’s a good recipe. I sometimes wonder at Tony’s ability to not loose track of a tune as Steve sometimes cracks a joke right in the middle of something. Which is brilliant as it can lighten an evening. That is not to say this one needed that as Steve & Tony keep it country from “The Midnight Cowboy” “Ce-la viv” On a very Hot June night the floor buzzed, lots of new faces and Stetson’s spotted. “Home to Louisiana”, Mixing, Old along with new country songs adding a dash of Irish via “Galway Girls”. One thing you can rely on Plain Loco will look as good as they sound. Andy ‘D’ kept the requests flowing till the wee small hours, and Julie ‘K’ Murray was spotted in a corner teaching some 3 foot high newbie’s. Brilliant.
RED HOT JUNE PARTY 11.6.10 Opening Night Tony Rouse & Cross Country. With a line up like that I had to just sit and wait for it to happen because I knew it just would. Tony Rouse with that great big super smile bounced up onto stage opening with “Hear Comes my Baby” and quickly flowed into “Galway Girls” his manner and presentation is such that you just want to dance or just enjoy. My feet don not move much but I found myself clapping along with everyone else as he wound us up. George Strait’s “All My Ex’s live in Texas” and a new one for me “Party Crowd” David Lee Murphy. Both Tony’s sets where a mixture of old favorites along with some new ones that will end up as greats. “Father & Daughter” Rhett Akins “That Ain’t my Truck” Needless to say Tony achieved the usual Encores Crystals “Da Doo Ron Ron” What an ending. Cross Country & JP Taylor The ultimate Country Lovers Band that give it all. They have a repertoire that most bands envy Favoring only the very best of the Eagles, Playing standards from Vince Gill, They opened with “Fast Moving Train” They play there music with relish. To listen to Steve making a guitar sing, always with his eyes closed he appears to just go into the mood of the music. JP is the icing on the cake when this band plays. With a double line up of Tony along with JP and Cross Country there was no way that this night would fail. During the onset of Andy’D’s marathon he played some outstanding requests. Cross Country along with Tony Rouse played “Somebody like you”, “Church on Cumberland Road,” and finished on Lynyrd Skynrd “Sweet Home Alabama” Amazing.12.6. bright and breezy Julie [Katz}Murray, first on the floor ready to teach the first of her chosen dances. Saturday afternoon. Joe Mitchell played two top class sets of country music on a very warm world cup afternoon. He set us of with Dwight Yoakam’s “1000 miles from nowhere”. Joe mixed up country tracks old and new with is very own original efforts having just released via iTunes. He covered some great artists. However, Joe’s own songs, where a real highlight. It was refreshing to see someone having the courage and conviction of their own talents to perform original, self written country music at a country music weekend. I for one have logged on to iTunes and downloaded Joe’s new album. Saturday Night. Hot & Sultry, grim World cup evening the double line up for the evening being Blood Brothers & Jellico Road. Both acts had a hard time trying to cheer up folk and get there feet dancing after the poor show of the English team. But needless to say Blood Brothers tried there very best giving us two fine sets of country music. From “Hillbilly Shoes” and “Honky Tonk Stomp” Jellico Road a three piece band, back to entertain us, Dawn Stanfield’s & John Henry taking most of the lead on songs. Dawn gave us an amazing version of Kelly Pickler’s “Red High Heals” They do justice to songs that other bands leave. Sugerland “Down in Mississippi” brilliant. It’s so great to hear songs that we do not expect. The expected encore Billy Currington’s “Country Boys Roll” what a winner. Blood Brothers went up with Jellico Road to give us a rousing “Sweet Home Alabama” soon will come the time when I hope that a group does not use this to close. The Stall that we run every party. Raised £195.00 to be kept to one side to add to our final total for St Wilfred’s Hospice. We would like to thank Malcolm & Dale for there hard work, manning the stall this evening.. 13.6.09 Sunday is The 2nd early start for lessons with Julie. 4 new dances, yet again. I want to know what energy drink she has. I need some. Sunday afternoon. Cheyenne made a very welcome return to an extremely warm afternoon. With amazing harmonies wonderful set list and two brilliant singers. Highlight’s for them “Before he Cheats” Southern Voice” “It Happens”. We look forward to seeing them again. FINAL NIGHT, Broadcaster & Texas Tornados. Our closing acts for this weekend. Broadcaster mixed it up with lots of favorite linedance numbers. Lisa Rogeo sang “King of the Road” with the boys. From “People are crazy” Alan Jackson’s “having a good time” “That’s my Story”. Pete was wearing his usual trilby, now getting a little squatter. Texas Tornados. Each one dressed in matching shirts. Not only did they look great they sounded good too. Opening with a brilliant “Guitars & Cadillac’s” they sped through numbers almost quicker than folk’s feet could catch the floor. However he took time out to serenade our Julie for her birthday. 21 again!!. From Brad Paisley’s “Catch all the Fish” Texas Tornados always find those brilliant country songs that are not aired every week. Question? How does he manage to sing “Hey Mr. Policeman” whilst dancing Uh! How does he do that? Well after 8 acts over this weekend. Andy ‘D’ slowed down his decks for a well earned rest and boy did he play some brilliant requests. Jacqui Peacock & Andy Davies
5th June 2010 FOOLS GOLD
Our First Saturday for flaming June Fools Gold made a return visit Last time we saw them was August last year. Debbie & Paul are the ultimate duo being so in tune with each other that it is a pleasure to see. Paul has one of those voices that lay easy on the ear He sung a great version of “What do you see” the dance floor very quickly filled for this popular Robbie McGowan line dance. Throughout there sets they sang dance friendly numbers that kept a floor very busy. Debs and Paul introduced daughter Melissa who gave us “Home to Louisiana” So in all for three sets we had great numbers such as “Bobby with an I” Debbie gives a super version of Lady Antebellum” Need You Now”
They mixed the Old country songs with the new, keeping the music flowing with little chat but a lot of song. ‘Smashing’. “
29th May. Nathan Carter returned to the Viking. Nathan had a different line up same outstanding voice Nathan Carter won the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ award the N. I. 2010. The band behind Nathan is Steve L/guitar, Seamus Acoustic Guitar, Gareth/drums. Jimmy, Bass/guitar Chris Keyboard. The Band throws an Irish lilt at you for the majority of there songs which gives it that upbeat rhythm. All dressed so smartly in Black with grey waistcoats they looked slick and smart. Opening with, Joe South’s “Games people Play” and little aired “Got No reason now for going Home” I last saw this one sung on Rural TV “To Sweetest of All” a Dr Hook standard. Nathan’s voice fits these lovely waltz type songs that just make some want to stand and sway. Throughout both 1 hour sets Nathan likes to lull folk into a sense of, Oh my god! because a dance will turn into a medley that leaves you footloose and worn-out. From the oldie’s to the newbie’s Randy Travis “I told you so” we had a brilliant night and Andy ‘D’ held us all in the palm of his hands by playing outstanding requests that appeared to be mostly country until the late hours when the techno broke into a frenzy of new dances on the floor. May a month to remember when the Viking bought country to Selsey.
22.5.09. Spaghetti Western. A massive surprise was in store for us. Tonight Pete & Graham i.e. better know as the Broadcaster duo, have been hiding a couple of gems from us. ‘Graham’s sons’. With Pete leading from the front the quartet dressed in American style check shirts and Stetson’s with the exception of Pete. played full on country music what a delight to the ears of all before them. They opened with “Okie from Muskogee” a Merle Haggard’s oldie. From playing standards, from the likes of, Buck Owen, Billy Carrington. We had such a rich selection of pure country to choose from it was almost too hard to bear. “Peaceful easy feeling” written by Jack Tempchin but made great by the Eagles, gave Graham a showcase for his rare guitar talent. His boys Sam on Drums & Will on Base did there father proud. It was a night of fantastic Country music that made me feel like the cat that had the cream. I would have run out of paper writing down the gems that where aired this superb evening. The evening ended on such a high that I was breathless. Two encores later I had to call it a night, but now wanting more. of Spaghetti Western
15th May. JELLICO ROAD. Jellico Road are a new band on the scene. Featuring Dawn Stanfield L/ Vocals, John Henry L/Guitar & backing vocals Craig Whyte. Vocals/guitar "Lookin' for a Good Time” [lady antebellum] intro sung by Dawn. Well what a voice. Complete surprise to me. ‘Brilliant’. Dawn gave her versions of some wonderful standards doing each one proud this band; I have been told Jellico Road are developing as they go. Well they only need a tweak hear and there because the songs they showcase keep the floor full, listeners and dancers happy this is a band to watch, they will be making headlines in the very near future. Craig gave us a brilliant version of Billy Currington’s “People are Crazy”. Throughout three sets, they thrilled almost all. And as for “It Happens”. ‘Sugerland’ would have enjoyed the cover. Andy D' Our in house DJ although suffering with a poorly back. pulled out all the stops playing tunes that had us all wanting to keep dancing.
8.5.09. Weston Line graced the Viking for a debut performance. Both brothers Dressed, western style in keeping with the theme of Country. Weston Line, A duo made up by Paul & Cliff Weston. Lots of us know Cliff for his amazing steel playing. Both Paul & Cliff have graced the country scene for many years and decided that together they would play the music that means the most to them. COUNTRY which in many ways depicts the reason behind there name i.e. Weston Line. This is a duo that is going to throw up the occasional curve; I freely admit that the first song was new to me. But, a good one. Each song, chosen, with, dancers in mind. Listeners where not forgotten either. The harmonies, where superb both voices so in tune with each other giving a sound clearly enjoyed by all. From the Eagles “Tequila Sunrise” & Joe Diffie’s “Honky Tonk Attitude “ country songs coming at us thick and fast. some obscure, enjoyable songs that kept the brain box ticking, and others that we adore the likes of “Laid back in low key” Paul threw a great northern version of “If you’re Going through hell” Throughout three sets Dancers filled the floor. Weston Line not only looked the part. They gave us the promised full on country. A fantastic Encore brought out a fast “Walk the Line”. Andy played his usual requests. Brilliant night. Weston Line replaced the booked act for us and did us proud.
May 1st. The Viking welcomed Lass Vagas, Now a duo. Making up the Duo Nadine Somers & Rob Childs. A packed Viking with, very little bar space gave us there first appearance at the Viking as a duo. And may I say it was the very best I have ever heard Nadine sing. Opening with “Man in the Moon” they very quickly set the scene for the rest of the night. Throughout three sets they pleased all before them. Lots of brilliant dance plays but also outstanding oldies cropped up that set the grey cells creaking, “Patient Heart” “Cowboy Sweetheart” just two of the oldies that I should mention but “Does the wind still blow in Oklahoma” was sung with panache by Nadine the duo sung by both Rob & Nadine “I told you so” just underlined how brilliant the evening went because they sounded so good. They of course got encores and they where well deserved. A duo not to be missed. They faded out to “C’est las vie” for my money the night should not have ended. However, our Andy ‘D’, Rose to the occasion, he played some brilliant requests. Also our Julie taught some beginner dances to a very large party of weekenders that had taken the trouble to have a cowboy night out by dressing as Mexicans, cowboys and cowgirls. Brilliant, colourful and lots of fun.
24TH April. Country came to the Viking in the form of the amazing The Diablos. Opening with a standard “I just want to dance with you” from the amazing George Strait led us into something we did not expect. A array of phenomenal own brand music that was fresh brilliant a yes very dance friendly. The Diablos not only look the part, they play it also. From Chris Nieto on Vocals, Francois Deville, Steel, and Danny O’loughlin Guitars & Vocals Terry O’Loughlin Bass/Vocals. Geoff Ansell, Drums. Standing in tonight, for Danny, due to volcanic ash, was Matt Windler. Applause, please. This band kept us all on our feet. They kept everyone on there guard to see what would be played next, as it was all very new to our ears. New! but brilliant. “She Changes Everything” “Tattooed Tears” there own music which is oh so refreshing. ”Right by Your Side” a waltz that most country singers would be Proud, to sing. Peppered throughout three sets standards cropped up the likes of Boot Scooting Boogie” “Copperhead Road” Andy ‘D’ our DJ did his usual request plays but lets face it although Andy kept everyone happy. Tonight, that was so easy for him to ask if anyone wanted some more, they gave us “Sweet home Alabama” a night that folk will remember.
17th April. 2010 Diamond Jack Last here in October ’09 Gave two sets of Linedance friendly numbers laced with a there usual 50/60’s diversion down memory lane Whilst watching the dancer’s dancing to Strawberry Wine, I was mesmerised watching one of our couples as the gentleman shadowed each movement of his lady. Brilliant, stuff. Our Julie [Katz] Murray led from the front refreshing dancers for a dance taught earlier that day. Her smile whilst doing so is great. [Others should follow her lead] For those of you that don not yet know Our Julie has said yes to Andy ‘D’ and now wears his ring.
Brushwood, Andy, L/Vocalist, & Brian, who hales from the likes of, Texas Tornados, Honest Truth to name but a few Make up the Duo named Brushwood. They play music that keeps the floor full of Linedancers. Throughout three sets there was very little floor space visible. Dancers danced to “Woman” “Cabo San Lucas”, “Magic Moon” to name but a very few, Even giving us a brilliant Toby Keith’s “Lets Get Trashed” There is also some amazing news to be spread around to give us all some good cheer. Our Andy ‘D’ asked Julie [Katz} Murray for her hand [did he go down on one knee?
Magill 3rd April Magill A duo that never holds back, they love to entertain and it shows. Opening with that ever popular Patti Page number “Man in the Moon” they took barely a breath to gather speed into the “Grundy Gallop” this appeared to be the key to the evening, not much space between songs, not a moment wasted in keeping folk happy, feet tired and ears bent on what was to come next. During one of there three sets they lulled everyone into a false sense of security by inviting folk up for ‘walk the Line’ dance. This very quickly led into “, She’ll be Coming round the Mountain” that bled into another four songs before finishing up Going back round that Mountain. [A song still sung that goes way back to the 1800’s.] Throughout Three sets, there was never a dull moment on the floor. Magill very successfully mixed old and new, which made us use our very grey cells. Brilliant. Also, I have to admit to really enjoying “Human” sung with a western twist to the track. They obviously earned there Encore for which we where luck enough to get two. “My New Life” & “Galway Girl”. We welcome them back later in the year.
Sunday 28th March Re-vamped line-up for Muddy Boots appeared this evening, hear at the Viking. Muddy Boots a trio of Musicians that liken to play ‘proper’ country music. A brilliant version of “Children” brought out dancers that needed to recall and old favourite also rarely sung Brooks ‘n’ Dunn’s “Every River” another to add to the obscure but brilliant songs that can be danced to. With each passing year we see faces change in groups but hopefully they remain true to there original remit. Muddy Boots did just that, tunes that can be listened to as well as danced to and enjoyed big time. Our Andy ‘D’ announced birthdays of Leslie & Tim and played everyone’s requests. The Saturday after a party weekend, always appears to be a little quieter, yep! It was, but it was a good weekend.
MARCH PARTY. Once called the Mad March Party, now should be called the brilliant 2010 Opener for Viking. The 19th through to the 21st. the start of the Andy’D’,s Marathon stint in his box. Up to the Okkie Alan Gregory Opening the 1st of his two sets with a packed floor to “Memories” looking very smart, huge smile, ran through various numbers that had Linedancers running for the floor. Alan never fails to please, making his sets entertaining and easy on the ear, and oh so dance friendly. The floor was never empty. Alan was kind enough to donate a couple of his wonderful CD’s to our stall for fund raising. He obviously pulled out an encore which pulled a “Louisiana Swing” which our Andy with a ‘D’ bounced to side stage right. The Thrillbillies being the other half of tonight’s double line up set out with “Crazy Foot Mambo” Eddy gave us a wonderful “She believes in me” a song from 1978 still sounding so fresh. “California Blue” brought Dave out onto the floor. Dave, being the quite one, is an amazing musician. Always so approachable. Eddy & Dave also gave us a couple of there CD’s for our stall. We also had to bade goodnight to the Angels Line dance club who could only make the 1st. night. Satand Sunday Morning Julie ‘Katz’ Murray taught dances from all genre’s “Lets Chill” “Bobbi with an I” amongst them, Julie is always so full of exuberance and is sure to be around to stand in the front to be there to guide those new to the dance. She also taught the Daffodil Dance to raise funds in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care A big hand for that as £180.00 went into the pot. Our afternoon was given over to the Dave duo ie American Spirit hailing from the North East there 5 year’s of being a duo and only playing Country precedes them as they do not like to play techno but adore there country Music, which pleases most folk. Saturday Night the 20th . BROADCASTER & CAJUN MOON,. We also set up the second user western wear stall. And “Broadcaster” took to the stage. Pete [trilby] & Graham Opened with “I just want my baby back” “Caught in the Act” where also included within there sets. Both of which, where enjoyed with relish by all around. Notably the “Rocky Wranglers” took over a corner where by they led in the fun and frolics, each and every night, rarely has a club made such an impact on us Viking’ers. They danced each and every dance with a smile teaching a lesson that some of us could take on with some grace. They are fun, and most enjoyable to watch. “Cajun Moon” My word Pete .Gary, Charlie & Dean, could leave other bands standing for smartness. They all wore matching outfits of the Gambler persuasion not only looking the part but Oh! My gosh, they sound it too. Keeping it tightly country they kept every one enthralled. “I love the way you love me” a John Michael Montgomery song from 2003 and after running through some amazing all country hits they blew us away with there version of Trace Adkins. “Swing” I must also mention that for us to hear a great Live drummer is something not to be missed but enjoyed. The evening ended with Cajun Moon & Broadcaster squeezing onto the stage giving us a very upbeat OKIE FROM MUSKOGIE - Merle Haggard number. Followed by Chuck Berry’s Johnny ‘B’Good What a night pheew! Sunday morning bright and early Julie was waiting to complete her lessons. There where some tired feet out there but they all took to the task with relish.A Youthfull Richard Palmer with an extrodinary hair cut that set him out as being one of a kind. Had the afternoons entertainment. Whereby it could not have been in safer hands.Richard very in tune with dancers favorite dances kept the floor busy giving us a brilliant version of “Don’t tell me you’re not in Love” he is an energetic a brilliant solo artisit. 21st. Sunday Night. Our finale for the March party. Livewire & Texas Tornados. Our, last double act this March Ainsley & Debbie. Both hail from Sussex. Now established since ’07, have gained a great following. Both appeared in matching shirts and looking good. Ainsley opened with a super version of “Woman” they proceeded to keep the floor full with old and new Linedance songs that just made folks feet want to dance. Debbies version of the Killers “Human” has to be heard. Her strong clear voice can be clearly heard all around. Its so nice to hear the words sung so clearly and brilliantly. Texas Tornados threw a curve at me as they have gained a new member Stewart from Gemini joins Roger McKew Pete Stothard. Pete better known as the dancing cockney cowboy gave us two exceptional livley stints of full on country music at times on the floor kicking as high if not higher than the rest. They have a wonderful fan base who loyaly follow them everywhere. He sang a beautiful “Don’t Tell Me” and Josh Turners “Why Don’t we just dance” from the obscure to the upto this very moment. Pete keeps it fresh and country “Cheating on my honky tonk” another new one to my ear but, brilliant. Pete called up onto the stage, Ainsley,& Debbie, Richard Palmer to have a short jamming session with his band.now being time to say Goodnight to “Rockies Wranglers” a great bunch who have not only enjoyed themselves but been oh so entertaining. The Stall raised £215.00 the bucket gained £62. we sold for Bill £298 pounds of tickets to add to what he had already sold. All these monies go the Sophie fund. Check out her web site. “Help Sophie Walk” Bill Brandes paid into the £728.20 to The Help Sophie Walk Thankyou Bill.
13.3.10 Calico arrived at the Viking with a re arranged Line-up, now a duo, and for any to think that they would not be as strong as a duo are completely misguided. They are as strong and bouncy, as ever they were. Opening with a 1964, Dottie West number “Hear Comes my baby” the floor quickly filled, Alexandra Burkes “Bad Boys” along with “Get Trashed” which kept the purist Liners happy. Altough much to my pleasure [and I am biased] the majority of songs sung by Nikki & Shanks where pure golden country. Throughout Three sets Nikki kept it fresh and livley. Her take on “Amame” & “Amore De Heilo” should be legendary as her ability to catch spanish phrases & tounge twisters are brilliant. They have changed there set list keeping it right up to the moment. In fact they where so good they pulled out two encores from the Viking crowd not an easy task.
6.3.10 We opened the 2010 season with a band that we knew was a sure fired cert to live up to the name of country. They play country music like no other live band on the UK circuit can. Cross Country are a band that are renowned to keep it country. And far be it for the floor to remain empty and void of Linedancers. No way. They get out there on the floor enjoying the crack, “Alright Already” Bill Murray’s “Walk softly on this heart of Mine” It’s great to hear songs from the Country Hall of Fame with life injected into them and danced to, and if ever there was a band to do that Cross Country, are such a band. There feel, and skill, with the music and there instruments, are bar none. When I watched the playing of “Humming Bird” I was mesmerised and impressed. I just cannot leave out there brilliant drummer always keeping a tight rhythm and brilliant beat although rarely seen. Joe Bewick [Drums]. Ted [Bass] Joe [Drums] Steve [Lead] John P Taylor [Vocals]. A group that when seen never disappoint.
At last I have sent to print mine and Andy's words with regards to our wonderful party held this October '09
16TH to the 18TH.October. The Last Viking Party 2009 Our last party of the year had on offer another double header The Thrillbillies & MT Allan with an opener like that how we could go wrong. Eddie & Dave had lined up two great sets for us to get us in a great party mood just for fun whilst singing a Kenny Rogers “She Believes in me” pinched a Duck Canapé from the Angels line dance club who where with us for the party. And as for “VERTICAL EXPRESSION” that to was absolutely great. “Chocolate covered candied Kisses” was another number that had every one up. It was fun to watch Eddie play tricks on various members of the audience ie creeping up on the unawares [I was caught also] whilst we where singing along to some of the fantastic numbers that he was giving us. They gave us two sets over the course of the evening packed full of numbers that kept your feet busy drawing out the expected encore which was also typical i.e. Jimmy Souls 1996 number “If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life” Oh yes. MT Allan Mal & Dave also gave us two rip roaring sets that had a packed floor bursting at the seams. Looking around we had The Angels dancing in there corner another group dancing in the mine over by the DJ’s box of tricks where a super group of girls that where waving light sticks and shaking there tambourines The Viking was heaving and every one had a huge smile on there face. Josh Turners “Would you go with me” fit’s Mal’s voice like a glove Dave gave us his “Young Man’s Town” As for “Tempted” We had rows of dancers within rows. From “Rollin with the flow” to “Loving all night” a first party night to remember, closing with Eddie, Dave Mal & Dave all together on stage giving us an impromptu jamming session that had us all longing for more.Saturday morning kicked off very early with a packed dance floor ready for some top quality linedance instruction from Julie ‘KATZ’ Murray . First up an ice breaker! A fun dance from Audrey Watson called My Little Shirt that settled everyone in to the morning session. Next was a sure fire floor-filler from Robbie McGowan Hickie. ‘Mexicali ‘is a fantastic 64 count dance to a lovely country track, Mexico by Tobias Rene. This was followed by a dance to the Alexandra Burke’s number one record Bad Boys. Although it was such a new track, there are a plethora of dances already written to it. Julie chose Bad Boys by The Girls for its superior steps, and the dancers loved it. The final dance of the morning was again from the pen of Robbie McGowan Hickie to a great country track. ‘What do you see?’ by Doc Walker (dance is the same name) flows really well and Julie had been teaching it to her Viking regulars for the previous two weeks and was too good not to put in the party line up.The live music for the Saturday afternoon was going to be provided by Stubby and ‘The Blood Brothers’. However there was a very quick change of plan as The Blood Brother was a no-show as they were in fact 1,000 miles away in Cyprus! A quick phone call and Broadcaster made a diversion to play a great set of music to keep our afternoon crowd more than happy. In fact Pete and Graham gave an outstanding performance of both up to date and floor filling classics and are now one of the most sought after duos on the country and linedance circuits. Stubby naturally complimented the duo as he still has one of the most recognizable voices of any solo act. Between them the floor was full all afternoon and the atmosphere was kept at boiling point. 17th. October Saturday Night Jacqui & Mal opened up the Viking’s very own charity stall. Something that Colin and Jacqui had thought up to try to make money over the year for our named charities. As you may be aware we made just over £240 pounds the last party held back in June, so we had high hope for this one. Around the venue we also placed buckets for small change donations. We sold over £200 pounds yet again of people’s donations which we hope will now become, someone else’s treasures. Our Andy resplendent in a great new shirt introduced Cheyenne a Duo new to us here at the Viking having just returned from touring Spain over the 6 years. What a refreshing revelation. Singing, numbers that had folk running for the dance floor no-one was going to be disappointed this evening. During there set’s some numbers really stood out the likes of “I told you so” a great duet sung by Carrie Underwood/Randy Travis. The very best version I’ve heard sung by anyone here at the Viking and as for the several Shania Twain songs sung ‘wow’. Others, the likes of “Amazed” as well as Grechen Wilson‘s “Rebel Child” I have to admit to having embarrassed my self for not asking ‘Cheyenne’ what they are called individually. I for one want to see and hear them again. Did they get an encore!! Oh yes! Giving us a fine, “Be my Baby Tonight”, before leaving the stage. Diamond Jack; almost require no introduction, being the other duo this evening, what a second night. It has got to be rated as one of the very best middle nights of a party. Father and Son opened with a superb “Galway Girl “Diamond Jack” like to interlace there sets with numbers that are up to date making them a sure fired winner with liners “Hard Rock Heart” a flash of sixties with Saturday Night at the Movies &”You Can Dance” drifters song still wowing folk from 1964 then they fetch you right back to now with a fine version from Warren of a Killers number “Are we Human” mix it! oh yes, kept fresh you bet. The night went at warp speed with every one up for the crack. The curtain came down with Diamond Jack & Cheyenne taking centre stage together they gave us a rip roaring encore with a further six numbers mostly fast Irish ones that had us begging for more. Sunday morning after last night wonderful entertainment we didn’t expect a large crowd to turn up so very early for even more Linedancing with Julie ‘KATZ’ Murray how wrong could we have been. An even busier session, than Saturday morning’s. The coffee machine was in overdrive. Julie taught 4 more dances to suit all levels We where also fortunate enough to have Peter & Alison to teach a further two dances, One as far removed from country as you can get, but then again we cater for all. Eight dances taught over this party weekend. The wonderful boys behind the bar decided to add there bit to the collective attempt to raise funds. They sold hugs and kisses raising loads to add to this evening final total. Providing the entertainment, this afternoon. ‘Livewire’ Ainsley & Debbie a firm favourite for afternoon party weekends. They pride themselves with being up to date and keeping dancers happy, this afternoon was no exception. Playing the latest and greatest dances over two one hour sets. Debbie is producing a great range of songs that really suit her vocals this being demonstrated with her version of Human Dancer. Sunday Night our last night of partying this year hurumph! Tony Rouse –Plain Loco This evening served us up the most amazing night ever. Both apart from packing the floor with numbers that had us all singing along & dancing almost without a breather decided to Tony Opened with “Hear Comes My Baby” a 1964 Dottie West number still every popular “That Ain’t My truck” it’s so refreshing to hear songs that are not ‘run of the mill’ Tony was up for two sets but the second set outdone all that went before. Having decided to allow us to adapt his new jeans he charged us a £1 a snip. Whilst singing “I wanna Be Elvis tonight” It was so far out there for being fun that we just had to take advantage!the first of many jumped up onto the stage to snip at Tony’s jeans [yes he was wearing them!] After some hilarious antics where our Andy ‘D’ threatened Tony with a large Tree felling saw which had us all gasping for breath after laughing so much. Tony ended up with hazard tape around strategic area’s I think Tony is amazing and he raised loads of dosh’ to add to our collection. Now the challenge was up for Plain Loco. Equal the efforts of Mr Rouse. Indeed they did apart from singing the usual amazing numbers that kept us dancing we had to roll our pound coins to as near as dam it bottle of Vodka in order to win it along with a collection of there cd’s. The boys done good, They then asked for as many ladies as is possible to accompany them on stage well the Viking stage is not that large but however they managed to get over 60 folk up there with them. They then counted them down giving me a pound for each lady that stood with them. It was one of those rare nights where the music was superb the company was amazing and the atmosphere electric. So armed with over £945 pounds locked in the safe ready to donate I was a happy bunny along with all of the rest of us. The staff behind the bar went that extra mile for me and I adore them for it and as for Tony & Steve & Tony what can I say other than Thank you so much. for List of dances taught at this party please see web site www.vikingcwc.com Jacqui Peacock Andy Davies
31st October. The Viking’s Last night of the Season. What a wonderful night it turned out to be. Before, I add another word. The entire, Viking wish to send love, and best wishes to Debbie, she suffered a heart attack during the week. We wish her well. Darren Busby therefore learned that he was part of a different line up. Darren gave us two amazing sets that kept the floor full all night with the exception of one song which brought about an exceptional audience they sat in front of Darren who tried to complete the song without bursting into laughter. Both sets where full of great numbers beauty of which many of the songs sung where fresh the likes of Colin Ray’s “Don’t Tell me You’re not in Love” and Garth Brooks “Katie Wants a fast One” Darren also included some wonderful Drifter numbers, all in all both sets where packed full of Dance friendly numbers that had an audience smiling. Steve James band Viking Virgins, gave us a brilliant set was packed to the gunnels with superb numbers the had dancers running for floor space, very little verbal exchange, that’s ok as the Glasgow burr was hard to understand but not the entertainment that was vibrant and what a great night they gave us. Lets just say the filling in the so called sandwich was enjoyed by all. Steve gave us one of the best “Swing batter swing” brilliant, and his take on the Grundy gallop with a definite Scottish twist was great. Leaving, folk, gasping for breath. I think they enjoyed it as much as we did. During the evening Colin our Manager interrupted the proceedings for a moment to thank Julie [Katz] Murray for her brilliant Linedance tuition The Big Guy Andy ‘D’ for his spins, my hubbie Mal for his assistance in our collecting for charity. Which, by the way, was just under £950 pounds. This will be shared between Odyssey & St Wilfred’s Hospice. Jane Green our Bar Manager who has feathered the nest for four years now also got some thanks. As for Colin Norton what can I say other than just keep on going please as we love the Viking and know that you are our champion? The evening ended with Steve James band & Darren Busby playing an impromptu gig which pulled out three encores. Wow! My all time wish for the new season. is that the bands will find a new favorite. I am getting so fed up with "How Long". It seams to me that every band that graces our stage wants to cover an eagles number. The same song every week sung by a different face can get so boring how ever well it's done.
24.10.09 Calico paid a return visit to the Viking last hear in July Nikki Napier lead singer; along with Brian “Shanks” and Cliff gave us for an opening number the ever popular Eagles number “How Long” The harmonies of this trio are very tight making a brilliant sound. Cliff sang “Angel of No mercy” with “Shanks” also adding “Guitars & Cadillac’s” to the Equations throughout three sets the floor was rarely empty. Line dancers appear to really adore this trio Nikki is known for her ability to pull of some amazing Spanish numbers The likes of “Amame” and rolling her ‘r’s in “Rebel amor” to perfection from the likes of “sister Kate”, No more Cloudy Days” I enjoyed “Mojo rhythm” a Wynona Judd number but my star of the night was “Holding on to yesterday” Nikki invited Leone onto the stage to sing “Closer”. We had a night full of dance worthy numbers with folk foot weary. For an encore Nikki gave us a brilliant fast “Seven nights to Rock”. Andy as usual played requests throughout the evening.
Texas Tornados. 10.10.09 Oh! My! What a night. The Viking was packed to the gunnels for the appearance of Pete & his crew. They all arrived on stage dressed in matching brown gingham shirts with Pete gracing a straw Stetson. Opening with “How long” and flowing straight into “Laid back in low key” one immediately deduced that we where in for a shindig. One of the Ladies taught to Linedance by our Pete, ‘Jane Tillbrook’ had brought along a coach load of friends to celebrate her ** birthday. The whole evening was an absolute blast. Texas Tornados lived up to the name by creating a storm of an evening with great songs, and atmosphere that meant that no one left the building before they had to. Throughout three sets the floor was packed Trace Adkins “Marry for Money” super’ and George Straits new release “Beautiful day for Goodbye” Don’t get me wrong I know I have highlighted two slow tracks but they deserved a mention. For an evening to end before you feel it’s due, you know that you’ve had a blast. P.s. Cheers Pete for the drink. jacqui
3.10.09 Swing Commanders. A sextet, mainly playing 40 style swing/country. I have seen this group on many an occasion and have always gushed over there performance, and never before have I been disappointed. However, on this occasion, I was. I’m not sure if, there hearts where not quite with us. Was it due to the fact that we where not overflowing this evening? Don’t know! What I do know is that for once they appeared to be playing solely for themselves. Andy ‘D’ however managed to get the dancers up and going when he played there favorite tunes.
